Norsk Institutt for Vannforskning (NIVA)

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is Norway’s leading institute for basic and applied marine and freshwater research, with 207 staff (2014) in Oslo, Bergen, Grimstad, Hamar and Copenhagen in Denmark, as well as the Marine Research Station in Solbergstrand, in the Oslo fjord. The institute’s research comprises a wide array of environmental, climatic, resource-related and socioeconomic fields organised in the Centre for Freshwater Research and the Centre for Coastal and Marine Research. NIVA’s world-class expertise is multidisciplinary and combine research, mapping, monitoring, assessments, problem-solving and advisory services at international, national and local levels. NIVA’s strategy towards 2020 focuses on research for a sustainable future where NIVA will assist government, industry and other decision makers with research-based knowledge and innovative solutions in order to assess risks and choose the most effective actions.
