The Radboud University, established in 1923, has nine faculties and enrols over 18,000 students. In 2014, RU was accredited as the best general university in the Netherlands. The Institute of Water and Wetland Research (IWWR) of the Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Computing Science has a tradition of marine research that started in 1973. Currently, marine research focuses on restoration, ecosystem engineering and feedbacks, biogeochemical cycles and biogeomorphology and is hosted by two departments, Department of Environmental Science, and the Department of Aquatic Ecology and Environmental Biology.
